The 2nd storey courtyard at the Federation of Education Unions (FEU) building presented a number of challenges, with restricted weight loadings, exposed conditions, a site viewed from above apartments and numerous light wells protruding 1M high into the courtyard area.

The planted wall divisions provide a series of spaces for shade and protected seating, their placement dictated by the support columns below. The walls were spread across these columns to maximize the area for plantings.

Clad in retro-reflective vinyl as solid blocks of primary colour, the walls create a vibrant space for casual meetings and lunches during office hours, while at night, the space is illuminated for functions and apartment residents above.
