Vertige China, a green roof company, commissioned Mel to design a rooftop garden for Military Hospital 454, Nanjing, China. It was to be a place for patient recovery as well as give further credentials to a hospital pushing for sustainable architecture and design.
Pulverized, non-slip rubber pathways meander through areas of extensive green roof plantings and building infrastructure, while planter boxes provide for vines to green the building edges.
Two sheltered seating areas feature walls of retro-reflective with designs based on traditional Chinese cloud patterns.
